A lead does not win the game.
What you do next does.
Your advantage matters when it creates a safer wave, first move, better fight, tower, objective, or clean reset. Here is what that looks like for every role.
Translation is a chain with multiple failure points.
An advantage on the scoreboard is only potential energy. Its value depends on whether the team can translate it into a constrained opponent and then convert that constraint into durable map progress.
Gold, XP, health, cooldown, wave or camp tempo.
First move, safe farm, vision line, invade or side-lane control.
Fight, pick, forced recall, cross-map trade or protected scaling.
Team gold, turret, objective, inhibitor or uncontested reset.
Same law, different conversion responsibility
The anchor forecast is the eventual-win estimate near the role’s studied 10:00 deficit. Lift columns show eight-minute improvement over expected continuation.
Top
The most isolated role can preserve win equity by stopping the bleed. Its personal recovery matters more at longer horizons, when side-lane gold and pressure can accumulate without immediately deciding the rest of the map.

Jungle
A jungle deficit is also an access deficit. Personal recovery has a sharp intermediate window, but the larger long-run gains come from fights, team economy, structures, and objectives.

Mid
Mid stabilization is valuable because it restores movement to both sides of the map. Direct recovery was too rare for a stable estimate; team conversion separated earlier and more reliably.

ADC
ADC recovery is delayed and threshold-driven. Protected income becomes more valuable over time, but team stability creates the waves, resets, space, and survivable fights that make private scaling possible.

Bottom duo
This is the combined ADC-support economy, not the carry alone. Carry income and support map value can substitute for each other, so the lane requires an explicit resource-allocation decision.

Support
Small personal recovery matters early because low-cost thresholds can restore ward, durability, and movement access. Over longer horizons, support advantage lives primarily in the team state it enables.

Self recovery pays later.
Top’s first job is stopping the bleed. Early teammate and team-gold gains beat personal recovery because the role is far from most early action. By eight minutes, personal recovery matters more as side-lane gold, tower pressure, teleport threat, and levels start to move the whole map.
Self recovery has a short window.
Jungle personal recovery nearly matches team recovery at +4 minutes. That is when reclaiming camps and tempo can restore agency before the opponent owns the map. Afterward, team-gold and fight conversion pull ahead: farm without access is incomplete.
Personal recovery is scarce; reconnecting is immediate.
Direct-recovery cells never hit the publication threshold. The winning route was to stop further loss and turn the breathing room into teammate economy, fights, turrets, objectives, or bottom-lane gains. Mid’s geography makes movement value arrive before scoreboard repair.
Self recovery is delayed output.
ADC recovery rises from +6.0 points at two minutes to +19.8 at eight as protected farm crosses item thresholds. Team gold stays larger throughout because a behind carry needs teammates to keep safe waves, resets, front line, and fight space before private economy becomes team damage.
The paired economy needs an allocation call.
Combined duo recovery rises from +5.8 points at two minutes to +24.4 at eight. Unlike the ADC-only model, this state also captures support income. Carry recovery and support map value are different routes, so “fix bottom” is incomplete until the team decides which partner farms and which creates access.
Small gold restoration matters early, enablement later.
Support personal recovery is competitive at +2 and +4 minutes because modest gold restores boots, wards, durability, or an active-item threshold. Once those tools exist, their value shows up through teammates: fights, team gold, structures, objectives, and map control dominate the long horizon.
What remains after shared team conversion is removed
Eight-minute cross-fitted contrasts hold every other measured pathway fixed. “Other teammates” excludes the studied role mechanically: four players for a solo role or ADC, and three for the bottom duo.
| Role | Self recovery | Other-teammate economy | Fight swing | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top | +10.7 pp | +15.4 pp | +14.0 pp | Other-four economy retains the largest isolated signal |
| Jungle | +3.5 pp | 0.0 pp | +14.1 pp | Fight conversion absorbs most of the shared recovery signal |
| Mid | Insufficient overlap | +6.0 pp | +22.3 pp | Reconnection appears primarily through team events |
| ADC | +5.5 pp | +2.2 pp | +18.5 pp | Much of private recovery is mediated through usable fights |

Adjusted ELR is the modelled drop in eventual-loss chance when one pathway flips on while the 10:00 state and other measured pathways stay fixed. Restricted to well-supported overlap states. Treat as associations, not proven causal effects.
When self recovery matters versus team recovery
Self recovery means the studied role improves its matchup gold differential. Team recovery means overall team gold differential improves by more than 500g. These pathways overlap.

Cross-role values are not a causal ranking. Corpora, role income, anchor-band definitions, champion mixes, and pathway prevalence differ. Compare the shape across time more confidently than the exact magnitude between roles.
Why the team pathways keep winning
Team gold shows conversion already happened. A personal edge may or may not convert. Team-gold recovery means some of that edge already survived contact with the rest of the map.
Fight swings pack several mechanisms. Position, numbers, cooldowns, vision, target access, champion strength, and execution can all turn one fight into kills, objectives, structures, and resets.
Structures keep their value. Champion gold can be thrown away. A destroyed turret permanently changes safe territory, income access, vision routes, and future objective setup.
Objectives depend on what came before and after. Lane priority, a won fight, health, tempo, and the next reset often matter as much as the objective label itself.
From “who is ahead?” to “what can this advantage buy?”
- 1Identify the live resource.
Is the edge gold, XP, health, wave position, camp tempo, cooldowns, vision, numbers, or item timing?
- 2Name the access it creates.
Safe farm, first move, river control, invade rights, side-lane pressure, objective setup, or protected scaling.
- 3Choose the role-appropriate conversion.
Top absorbs or pressures; jungle manufactures access; mid reconnects; ADC accumulates and outputs; the bottom duo allocates; support enables.
- 4Bank durable value.
Prefer conversions that leave team gold, structures, objectives, territory, or a clean reset after the immediate play.
- 5Stop when the chain breaks.
An advantage that does not create access is not permission to force. Stabilization is itself useful when the next conversion is unsupported.
How the role studies are built
Each role study forecasts eventual win rate from the full observed state inside 250g bands, with a 50-state publish floor. This page compares pathway lift over two-, four-, six-, and eight-minute horizons. Pathways overlap and describe what happened in winning trajectories, not the value of attempting one play.
